Julian Brown
Software Engineer
Arlington

Software engineer at Northrop Grumman with an Aerospace background specializing in simulation software for spacecraft embedded systems integration and test. Very proficient in C++, C and Java, and fluent in Python, Javascript and C#. Looking to secure employment with a company that allows me to shift my career away from embedded systems to Web, Big Data and Fintech.
Northrop Grumman
Aug 2017 - Ongoing
Associate Software Engineer
  • Developed and unit tested file transfer, file manager, and filesystem code modules in C for Common Flight Software, allowing other programs to reduce development time for their own flight software
  • Configured simulations of various flight software on VMware virtual machines, allowing for realistic and improved testing of flight software
  • Developed C++ models for various embedded components in the Cygnus spacecraft for SITL and HITL simulation testing
Virginia Tech
Nov 2016 - Feb 2017
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Study of perturbations generated by stratified incompressible thermo-hydrodynamics (PI. Dr. Paterson)
  • Created and conducted CFD simulations of perturbations generated by thermo-hydrodynamic disturbances using OpenFOAM and Python in the Unix environment.
  • Constructed 3D images of flow from 2D images using python and ParaVIEW.
Aerojet Rocketdyne
May 2016 - Aug 2016
Engineering Intern
  • Developed a GUI rocket motor sizing application (RocketSolver) in C# in order to greatly reduce time to create preliminary designs of a rocket motor.
  • Developed capability for the RocketSolver application to also perform preliminary structural and performance calculations.
Virginia Tech
Sep 2015 - May 2016
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Utilization of Wind Tunnel With Porous Flexible Wall for Aerodynamic Measurement(PI. Dr. Devenport)
  • Implemented Digital Image Correlation (DIC) techniques to measure deformation of a Kevlar plenum to find its Poisson’s ratio to allow for aerodynamic measurements without disrupting flow.
  • Designed an efficient method to speckle large sections of fabric for DIC measurements to reduce test setup from 5 hours to 1 hour.
  • Wrote MATLAB scripts to create speckle patters and calibration grid patterns to optimize DIC calibration to within ± 50 microns uncertainty for surface deformation measurements.
Virginia Tech
Sep 2015 - Dec 2015
Independent Study
Modeling of a Hall Effect thruster using C++ (FA. Dr. Srinivasan)
  • Modeled particles within a Hall Effect thruster using C++ to produce a real-time visual simulation of large quantities of charged particles. Simulation data was used to make predictions about the Hall Effect Thrust.er
Virginia Tech
Jan 2015 - Aug 2015
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Impedance Based Structural Health Monitoring of Hybrid ZnO Smart Composites(PI: Dr. Philen)
  • Wrote LabVIEW code automate impedance measurements so we could quickly test among a range of frequencies.
  • Automated data processing and plot creation using MATLAB to improve productivity for all members of the team.
